The bridge is also known as the “Capital of Texas Highway.” It is considered as one of the most scenic urban drives in central Texas. The bridge is actually a huge steel arch. More then 50,000 vehicles cross this bridge on a daily basis. More commonly, the bridge is called the 360 bridge only. After the acceptence of contract of this bridge in 1979, it’s fine steel work began. This major structural work of steel was finally finished in July 1982. The bridge was officially dedicated by Carole McClellan who was the then Austin mayor in 1982. Finally the bridge was opened for the public in the same year, that is, 1982, in the month of December. The bridge is called the Pennybacker bridge because it was named after Percy Pennybacker. He was the person who used to design the bridges for the Texas Highway Department(THD). He was also a pioneer in the field of welded structures. This 360 Austin bridge has also got a weathered rust finish so that the bridge easily blends around the nearby hills, lakes and other such natural structures. It is estimated that around 600,000,000 pounds of steel was used in the manufacture of this bridge.
This huge amount of steel was produced in Japan. The various structures of the bridge were specially fabricated in Ulsan, Korea. This was done in Korea by the Hyundai heavy Industries. These finished steel structures were then shipped to the Port of Houston and finally they were brought to the bridge site. The roadway surface of the bridge has been built from three thousand four hundred short tons of concrete. The construction of the bridge was also coordinated and supported by the Clearwater Constructors of Colorado. At that time Ed Westall was the project coordinator and the project supervisor was Buddy Johnson. The bridge designing engineer was David McDonnold. It is estimated that the bridge cost ten million U.S dollar to build. No part of the bridge’s structure touches the water 100 feet below. The bridge is around 1,150 feet long and has got a central arched span of 600 feet.
