Pitt Graduate Publishes New Book
Recent University of Pittsburgh graduate Cameo Rowe Jr.’s first book, “Defenders of the Realm I: The World Mystic Arts Tournament,” will be released to online booksellers fall 2008.
Cameo Rowe graduated in April 2008 with Bachelors degrees in Industrial Engineering and English Writing. During his five years at Pitt, he was a staff writer and later Co-Editor-in-Chief of BlackLine Literary Magazine, and the Publications Chair of the school’s National Society of Black Engineers chapter, starting The Torch newsletter.
Rowe’s work on “Defenders of the Realm” began before he came to Pitt. He developed the story as a gift for a retiring English teacher in his high school. The story used the names of his friends and immediate family for its characters, and evolved from a 20 page short story into a 300 page epic in his senior year.
During his 5 years at Pitt, Rowe developed his writing skills and translated them to his book, writing and re-writing the novel and its sequels multiple times. While he planned on “Defenders of the Realm” being a trilogy, he often considers expanding the adventure to include prequels and sequels.
The tale chronicles the adventures of Aleron and his friends in the world of Gaea. Aleron is a young mystic with extraordinary abilities that is separated from his family at an early age and raised in the wilderness. When he turns 16, he enters an ongoing war between the Kindred, the protectors of goodness, and the Occult, a sect of dark mystics.
Aleron’s mother, the High Priestess of magic, leads the Kindred, while the Occult is led by her former protégé, Sovereign. In “Defenders of the Realm I,” Aleron learns to use his powers and fight against an agent of Sovereign in the World Mystic Arts Tournament.
Cameo Rowe cited his love of “Star Wars,” “The Matrix,” and other science fiction and fantasy works growing up as his inspiration. Writing the books gave him a release from the tensions of school. He now plans to self-publish the novel, with copies being available on Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble.com, and other online retailers on November 15, 2008.
