Movie adaptions that never lived up to the book..?
1. The Thornbirds by Colleen McCullough (that movie had none of the books vibrancy and edge…it sucked on many levels)
2. Harry Potter (oooh… controversial. Seriusly, the books were quirky and magical and fascinating. The movies were good, but had no real magic and were too “dumbed down” to fit 600 pages into an hour and half movie)
3. The Chronicles of Narnia ( aka The Lion,the Witch and the Wardrobe…ditto the harry potter reason. Even the earlier movie was better than the recent remake.)
I am in agreement with you and with The Vet- much better to ask what film adaptations worked!
For those that didn’t-
Lord of the Rings trilogy- it was better to watch the directors cuts of the films on DVD, but there was so much that was altered in the big screen versions that drove me nuts originally.
As for Harry Potter- the first three movies weren’t that bad! Mind you, the first three books weren’t that long so it was easier to fit it all into a movie! They’ve gradually gotten worse as they leave things out that are important- I haven’t watched OotP in a while, but do they ever show the 2-way mirror? I don’t remember it at all, so they either dumped it or didn’t make it seem like anything.
Narnia- man, the only version of Narnia I liked was the one done by the BBC in the late 80′s-early 90′s. Enough said on that one!
What worked? Well that’s a little harder- there have been so many attempts at so many things, but the one thing I’ve found is that most books take a miniseries to really be able to express the detail and they still have to leave things out!
BBC/A&E production of Pride & Prejudice with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle worked well. It could have been longer even still, they did an excellent job. The more recent film with Keira Knightly was just a farce in comparisson!
Stardust – though it differs a little, I thought that they did an excellent job of bringing it to the big screen. It’s well worth the watch and a great adaptation.
As always, the book is much better, but I’m glad to get a chance to see what I’ve been imagining come to life.

There’s lots. Try “On the beach”, “day of the Triffids” and the 50′s version of “The day the Earth stood still”. They’re all very old. “Hitchhiker guide to the Galaxy” can’t be missed.
