Chamber music concert (Public opinion)?
I’m going to be starting a chamber music ensemble next semester, and I’m currently in the process of putting together repertoire. I’m trying to get a wide variety of genre for the program to show the diverse styles of music available. I want to get some public approval of the program I have so far because I want to make sure it will be an enjoyable concert for the audience. So far I have:
Early Classical Piece: Water Music Suite 2 or 3 – Handel
20th Century Piece: Quintet for Oboe, Clarinet, Violin, Viola, and Bass – Prokofiev
Wolrd (Celtic) Piece: Reel Time (I found it in the library)
Pops (movie soundtrack): Chronicles of Narnia Suite or Bourne Identity (with video montage)
Comedy Piece: Fanfare for the Common Cold – PDQ Bach (maybe)
I basically want to know, if you would hear of this concert and it was free, would you attend? Also, if you have any good recommendations or good criticism of the program, please let me know. Thanks.
I am a professional chamber musician in NY, book chamber ensembles for a living, and teach chamber music. Your program looks like it was put together by an amateur or kid with no knowledge or experience in chamber music whatsoever. Point by point – Handel is NOT early Classical, he is Baroque. And playing some kind of reduction is NOT chamber music – it’s just some kind of arrangement that perhaps you could get away with on a gig (wedding, party), but NOT for a concert. I own hundreds of those kind of arrangements ( and many hundreds of legitimate works!!!) – they are used for GIGS – never on stage when we perform a legitimate concert. WHAT Prokofiev Quintet – something real, or something arranged??? The Celtic pieces just does not belong here at all – God knows what it even is. And the last two works?? POP music?? This is a joke.
There is AMPLE music written for many different instrumentations of chamber music. Just because you get a small group of musicians on stage, and find SOMETHING you can somehow cram them into playing – does NOT make this chamber music. Since you say *semester*, I would assume that you are a music student in school. And although your intentions might be good, you clearly have NO idea how to do this. If this is the type of program where various ensembles are each going to contribute a piece, then they each should be able to find something really GOOD for their legitimate chamber instrumentation. If you have a set ensemble, then research works that accommodate them. I used to have a quintet of flute. violin,viola, cello, and piano. We would END each program with a work for the 5 of us – but during the rest, we had many choices of duets, trios, and quartets that covered many compositional genres and styles, and the changing instrumentation kept it fresh. I can see that you want to work hard at this – but you are WAAAY off on the wrong path.
